Earlier this week, I met with Karen Cox, the vice-chancellor of the University of Kent, to discuss the proposed closure of a number of university programmes and the resultant expected job losses in academic staff. The University is one of our largest local employers and contributes a great deal to our local economy and enriches our society.
It is clear that UK Higher Education is at a critical juncture, and we owe it to students, present and future, that we do everything we can to safeguard and enhance our universities and enable them to flourish. That’s why I’ve written to the Universities Minister, Robert Halfon, asking for an urgent meeting to discuss the situation and the way forward.
